Extended Family Photoshoots with Suffolk Master Photographer, Alison McKenny

Jan 31, 2020 | Family shoot

I’ve been a Family Photographer for coming up to 10 years now and over the past couple of years, Extended Family Shoots are becoming more popular.   Families take the opportunity to celebrate special birthdays, the arrival of a new Grandchild, or just getting everyone together can be rare in itself so they want to capture photos of everyone and preserve that moment in their lives.   Most families also share the cost of the final images between them, so it can be a much more economical way of having family photos done.

With Extended Groups, depending on numbers, we can either do the session in the studio or outside.   My studio isn’t huge so for larger groups, I would recommend either another venue or outdoors only.

The Shoot lasts up to 2 hours so I usually start with the whole group together, as that’s the most important photo that everyone will want.  After that, we can do as many combinations of different groups as you like within the time allowed.  I like to make my sessions fun and as painless as possible and I work fast to keep everyone engaged.

Below are some photos from a recent family session.  It was cold outside so we started in the studio first.   They were such a lovely family and great fun to work with.   Also, I loved their outfit choices and thought all the colours worked really well together.   I always recommend clients stick to block colours if possible as prints and patterns can distract the eye from the subjects lovely faces!  I do like Debbies scarf in this though as the pattern is subtle and it ties in the colours from everyone else’s outfits.

After taking these photos, we went outside to see if we could get some more.  It was very bright outside and a bit windy which doesn’t help as it can make everyone squint and the wind can mess with the ladies hair, but we still got some lovely shots! We were lucky it was such a beautiful winters day!

At the end, we got a couple more shots of all of them together, which ended up being one of the families favourites.
