At Alison McKenny Photography, I specialise in Maternity, Newborn and Baby Photography at my home studio in Stoke By Clare, Suffolk, which is very close to the Essex and Cambridgeshire borders.
Professionally, I have been awarded Master Photographer Status with the International Portrait Photographers and won ‘Image of the Year 2021’ with the Guild of Photographers in the ‘Newborn and Baby’ and ‘Children’s Portraiture’ Categories.
As a Mum of two beautiful boys, I know only too well how having a child can turn your life upside down and inside out. But it is such a special time and you will savour every moment from the minute you find out that you are pregnant, to the first time you hold your baby in your arms, to when they finally let go of your hand and walk on their own two feet, for the very first time. It is pure magic!
And believe me when I tell you it is over in a flash, and I just think it’s such a shame when all you have to remember it are a few hastily taken photos or video’s on your phone, that may get downloaded to the computer but rarely go any further.

To book any of the photoshoots below, a retainer of £99 is charged upfront. This is then deducted from whichever collection you choose to buy.
If you would prefer to buy a piece of Wall Art instead of a collection, then the £99 is not deducted from whatever product you buy, and there is a minimum order of £399.
Hair and Makeup Artist is available on request at £55 for hair or makeup or £110 for both.
At the end of the photoshoot, we will make an appointment for your viewing and ordering session in the following two weeks which we can do in person or via Zoom. You don’t need to decide which Collection or Products you would like to buy until this meeting and you have seen your gallery of x20 images and chosen your favourites. There is no pressure to buy any images should you decide not to.

YOUR NEWBORN PHOTOSHOOT EXPERIENCE AT OUR SUFFOLK STUDIO
Newborn photography shoots are best booked when you’ve had your 20-week scan to ensure availability in my diary. I’m usually booked up at least a month in advance but it’s always worthwhile getting in touch even if your baby has been born, just in case other babies haven’t arrived yet, there may still be some flexibility.
The best time to photograph a newborn is before they reach 3 weeks old and ideally between 10 to 14 days old. This is because around this time, they start to become less sleepy, more alert, and sensitive to touch, so can be more difficult to pose.
Every child is unique however, and I’ve had some babies as old as 4 weeks that slept through the entire session and others at 7 days old who were wide awake the whole time, so you can never predict how they are going to be. This is why we allow up to 4 hours per session to ensure nobody feels rushed, and we can take it at the baby’s pace. This allows us lots of time for feeding, changing, and settling your baby.
Siblings are also welcome during these sessions but for younger children (age 5 or under) we would suggest one Parent or Grandparent takes them home or to the park after we’ve done the family and sibling shots as they may well get bored in the studio waiting for the session to finish, and as it’s a small area, there isn’t a lot of safe space for playing.
We also need a calm and quiet atmosphere to get the most from your newborn so if you feel it’s unrealistic for your child to stay quiet for that amount of time, do please arrange for someone to take them home or to the local park while we do the rest of the session.
We have lots of props and blankets, hats, headbands and wraps available to choose from so you don’t need to worry about bringing anything special with you.
I only offer Newborn photoshoots in my Suffolk studio as I have found over the years that my chances of successfully settling baby and achieving the overall look to the images that I’ve become known for is only possible when shooting in my studio.

How long is the Photoshoot?
Newborn Photoshoots can vary from 2 to 4 hours. We allow enough time to take breaks for little ones so we are led by the baby mostly and if your Baby sleeps throughout then we could be done in 2 hours or if they take some settling and feeding, it can take 4 hours. If you would like Family and Sibling Photos in addition to the Newborn Photos, I would definitely allow 4 hours.
Can I bring my Partner and other kids?
Your Partner and other children are welcome if they are being photographed with the newborn and family. We do request that siblings kindly leave the studio after their photos with their Dad or a GrandParent so that we can continue the newborn shoot in a quiet and calm studio. Clients who live far away often take the Siblings to the local park, out for lunch, or a walk around the farm.
Do you provide hair and makeup?
Yes, we can offer Hair and Makeup which usually takes an hour and this can be done at our studio before or during your session while I photograph your newborn. We have been working with our Hair and Makeup Artist for years and her work is beautiful so she will help to give you a confidence boost for your session. It would be an additional charge but worth it to give you that little confidence boost. Both hair and makeup is £110 and either hair or makeup by themselves is £55. Please give me as much notice as possible if you would like to add this service to ensure she is available for your session.
When will my photos be ready?
This process of editing your photos generally takes anything from one to three weeks in busy periods. We will set up a mutually convenient date and time during your session for your viewing and ordering session which we can do at the studio or if necessary on Zoom.
We can do this in the evening when the children are in bed if that suits you best.
These sessions usually take no more than an hour and I will show you your images on a slideshow to music, and then can help you narrow down your favourites using a star system. I can also advise you on products including wall art, and Albums should you need help.
I just want Digitals! Do I have to buy prints?
There is no pressure to buy anything at all but Digital Files are only available to purchase with a Collection. The Collections also include a Print Credit which you can spend on Mounted Prints or Wall Art. Having been in this industry for 11 years now, I know a lot of my previous clients who just bought Digitals have never found the time to do anything with them, which is such a waste. When investing in a Professional Portrait Shoot, I want my clients to have photos that they can display around their homes and enjoy every single day.
As I use the best suppliers I know my clients will receive top-quality products that will last for years and years, so that future generations can also enjoy their family portraits.
