Alison McKenny Photography is an Award Winning Fine Art Childrens Portrait Photographer based in Stoke By Clare, which is a small village in Suffolk, close to the Essex and Cambridge borders.

Having trained with world-renowned Fine Art and Portrait Photographers Sue Bryce and Elena Shumilova and more recently with (SWPP Children’s Photographer of the year) Paulina Duczman, I have been inspired to capture children in a more elegant, yet timeless way.

These images are not the usual smiley portraits of your children that you see in lifestyle or standard studio sessions but are beautifully lit with soft light and dark shadows to create more moody and striking portraits. They will not date with time and are heirloom pieces that will be passed down from generation to generation.

These images have soft tones and emotive expressions that make you wonder what your child is thinking about at that moment.  I love doing these shoots as they allow me to be creative and it takes the pressure off the child to ‘smile for the camera’ all the time.  These sessions are usually focused on the children but I’m also happy to include parents too for some family portraits at the end of the session.

"We are over the moon with the images she produced for us and would totally recommend her work.”

“My daughter was lucky enough to have a fine art shoot with Alison and the results were stunning! Alison is very knowledgeable, professional, artistic, and welcoming.

Her studio, props, and wardrobe are fabulous as is the farm she is based on which I would imagine would make for a stunning outdoor location shoot! “

What makes her a fantastic choice though, is not only her talent and the pictures she creates, but how she is such fun at the same time!

“Ali is an exceptional photographer.
We had such a lovely photo shoot with Ali taking some maternity photos of me but also some family and fine portraits of the girls as well. I didn’t think my two young girls would last long but under Ali’s calm, relaxed and fun attitude they were keen for more. We are so delighted with the results! Pictures to really treasure. Thank you so much Ali!! Looking forward to booking you again once Baby number 3 arrives!”

"Her work is classic, stunning and unlike other photographers I have seen. "

“Ali is the ultimate professional. I was drawn to Ali’s work by the quality of the photos and just how lovely they looked. It helps that Ali herself is lovely, puts you completely at ease before, during and after shoot. We booked with Ali having complete confidence in her and we are not disappointed with the results.

The shoot was at Ali’s home studio where we were made to feel welcome and comfortable while she worked her magic with our baby. The photos were ready to view in less than 2 weeks which we did at our home and Ali’s eye for detail and advice helped us to decide what package worked best for us and what photos to have.

I would recommend Ali to anyone for any occasion or those wanting to capture memories to last a lifetime.
Thank Ali, you’re a truly wonderful photographer and have given us the best photos we could have hoped for.”

Lots of my clients ask me “what is Fine Art Photography and what makes it different to standard Studio Photography Portraits?”

Fine Art Photography is not about capturing a moment, that represents reality, like lifestyle or documentary style photography. It’s more about making an artistic statement, that has been envisaged in the artist’s mind before taking the photograph. Time has gone into planning every single element of the image including styling, clothing, props, posing, expression, lighting, and the background. Some fine art images will tell a story which make it all the more interesting to look at.

A fine art portrait image is created by the photographer as an artist and not just by the camera. A fine art portrait photograph is intended for wall art. It can sometimes be described as “décor photography” or “photo décor.”

When my clients contact me and tell me that they would like to have some Fine Art Portraits taken during their session, I love it as it gives me the opportunity to be creative.  The best images are when my clients tell me there is a story to tell with this image.  It might be something that reflects their childs personality or interests.  Or they might just want a really beautiful and compelling portrait of their child to display on their wall.  Either way is fine by me!

How old do your children need to be for this style of portrait?

I’m happy to do take Fine Art Portraits of children from age 3 upwards for outdoor sessions, but for styled studio sessions, I have found children age 5 and above are better able to follow directions from me. It really does depend on the child though. We can talk about this at your consultation and whether this style is best suited to your child and their personality.

We don't have any suitable clothing or props. Can you provide those?
Absolutely! If my clients have a story to tell that they want to stand out in their image, then I’m more than happy to include something personal to them to make the image all the more special.  Or I might have something suitable here at the studio. I have lots of props and vintage style outfits for children of all ages, hats, headbands, flowers, and other accessories available to use so you don’t need to worry about bringing anything special with you
Can we include a pet in the images?
So many of my clients ask if they can bring their family pets along to the shoot as they are very much a part of the family. I love animals especially dogs, cats and horses, and actually did a degree in Equine Studies when I was younger so am very confident in working with and photographing horses. Pets can join in on your Fine Art Portrait Session. We can take some individual photos of your pet as well as with family members, as they often have a special bond with certain members of the family.
This process of editing your photos generally takes no longer than two weeks. Due to COVID, I am now doing my Viewing and Ordering Sessions via Skype and we can set up a date in the diary before you leave your photoshoot.

We can do this in the evening when the children are in bed if that suits you best.

These sessions usually take no more than an hour and I will show you your images on a slideshow to music, and then can help you narrow down your favourites using a star system.  I can also advise you on products including wall art, and Albums should you need help.

There is no pressure to buy anything at all but you can buy an Album or piece of Wall Art from the A La Carte list rather than a collection if you prefer.

However, Digital Files, Mounted Prints and Luxury Folio Boxes are only available to purchase with a Collection.

Having been in this industry for 11 years now, I know a lot of my previous clients who just bought Digitals have never found the time to do anything with them, which is such a waste.  When investing in a Professional Portrait Shoot, I want my clients to have photos that they can display around their home and enjoy every single day.

As I use the best suppliers I know my clients will receive top-quality products that will last for years and years, so that future generations can also enjoy their family portraits.

Since COVID has appeared, we have taken it very seriously and want to make sure we are doing everything to keep our clients and ourselves safe.   We have safety guidelines in place and will send you more info on that before your session so you know what to expect.

I would love to hear from you, and if you do have any questions at all before booking, please do feel free to contact me using the form below.
