Why Cake Smash Photo Shoots are so much fun with Suffolk Photographer Alison McKenny

Jan 22, 2020 | Baby, Cake Smash

Cake Smash Photo Shoots are becoming more and more popular all the time.  A celebration of your little ones 1st Birthday is marked by this fun session and we can involve all the family so you can update your family photos at the same time.

Older siblings are welcome to join in and if your little one needs a break, I often use this opportunity to take individual portraits of the older child.

We will, of course, get some individual photos of your Baby too! This little man was such a climber and loved my little bed! Don’t worry Mum was very close by ready to catch him if needed!

Next we moved onto the main event, the Cake Smash!

This gorgeous naked cake was supplied by an old friend of mine, the lovely Vicki Murray.  She has baked cakes for myself and our family for years, so we have had birthday cakes, Christening cakes and even Wedding cakes from her and every one of them tasted as good as they looked! Amazing!

She now makes all of my cake smash cakes too and for this one, we opted for a naked cake with some greenery and so Vicky added some herbs.  Little Milo enjoyed smelling, tasting and flinging the healthy greens off his cake before he got stuck in to the cake itself!  It all adds to the fun and they don’t eat that much of it, they prefer to squish it between their fingers more than anything!  After a little bit,  big sister Eliza decided to come and lend a helping hand!

Once they had enough of playing and eating cake, it was time for most Babies favourite part of the session, the bubble bath!   And Milo was no exception.  He was full of smiles for this part of the shoot.

And once Baby has had enough splashing, we will take them out of the bath, dry them off and sometimes we’ll get a couple more shots of them wrapped up in a soft white towel, but only if they are happy to continue.  In this case, Milo was ready to have a break from photos and so we left it there.  I was really happy with how this shoot went and Mum and Dad loved all the photos too!

The shoot lasted about an hour and a half.  Sometimes we are done in an hour and other times the full 2 hours is needed giving babies lots of breaks for snacks or just some time out for cuddles or play.  It’s all very much baby-led and there is no pressure at any point to do anything they or their Mum and Dad are not comfortable with!

As I do need to order cakes for this session, I need a fair bit of notice so I’d always recommend booking in sooner rather than later, especially as the whole point is to mark your little ones first birthday.

If you would like to do this type of shoot but without the cake smash part (its not for everyone!), just let me know. I’m happy to accommodate all my clients’ requests.
