When is the best time to do a Newborn Photoshoot?

Jul 12, 2024 | Baby, Newborn

Hello, lovely parents and parents-to-be!  I’m Alison McKenny, a Suffolk based Newborn Photographer with over 13 years of experience posing your precious babies and capturing magical memories!

One of the most common questions I get asked as a Suffolk Newborn Photographer is, “When is the best time to do newborn photoshoots?” The simple answer is between 8 and 21 days old, but let’s dive into the details to explain why this is the perfect window for capturing those precious early moments.

Why Between 8 and 21 Days?

  1. Sleepy and Posed Comfortably 💤 During this period, babies are still very sleepy and more likely to stay in those adorable, curled-up poses that mimic their time in the womb. This makes it much easier to get those stunning, serene images that you’ll treasure forever.
  2. Feeding Established 🍼 By the second week, feeding routines are often more established, which means your little one is likely to be more content and settled during the shoot. Plus, Mom has had a bit more time to recover, making it easier to leave the house and enjoy the session.
  3. Flexibility for Timing ⏰ I understand that newborns operate on their own schedule, so I allow up to 4 hours for the photoshoot. This gives us plenty of time for feeding, soothing, and settling to ensure we capture the perfect moments without any stress. If your baby sleeps right through, we might even be done in an hour and a half!

Although there is definitely room for flexibility so don’t panic if you are reading this when your baby is already more than 21 days old, I’ve done Newborn Photos when baby is 3 months old as I have Chinese clients whose custom is to stay at home for the first 100 days so I have done photos after this and although it’s taken them longer to settle and they are more sensitive to touch, we have still managed to capture really beautiful images like the photo below.

Why Book Before Baby Arrives?

As a busy Suffolk Newborn Photographer, my diary fills up quickly. Booking your newborn photoshoot before your baby arrives ensures that we have a slot reserved for you during this ideal time frame. It’s one less thing to worry about once your little one is here, and it guarantees you won’t miss out on capturing these fleeting moments.

Have you thought of also capturing your Pregnancy with a Maternity Shoot as it’s such a fleeting and unique time in your life, and believe it or not, you will miss your bump when Baby arrives.    Lots of Photographers like myself will offer a discount when you book a Maternity shoot and Newborn shoot at the same time.   I give £50 off when you book with me!  Click the following link to find out more about my Maternity Shoots.  https://www.alisonmckennyphotography.com/bumps-and-babies/

What to Expect from Your Session

After you book, we will have a chat on the phone to discuss what you would really like from your Newborn Shoot and what images you have in mind.  It always helps if you put together a Pinterest board of the sort of images you love or send me screenshots from my gallery or Instagram page so I know what we are aiming for and so I can plan your session in advance, the poses, the backdrops, the props etc and the priorities so that I can not only meet but exceed your expectations.  My goal is to provide you with a stunning gallery of 20 to 25 beautiful images to choose from at your viewing and ordering session. There’s absolutely no pressure to buy, but I aim to create images so compelling that you’ll want to treasure them all. Whether it’s those tiny toes, sleepy smiles, or the tender moments with parents and siblings, each image will be a precious memory.
